Every creative professional can point to a few people who had a lasting impact on their development. For illustrator, designer, and entrepreneur Eli Nicolosi, one of those people was artist and entrepreneur Brian Endl.

Long before Nicolosi founded Astute Web Group or began working professionally in web design, illustration, and branding, he spent time learning and growing as a creative professional through Creative Pig Minds. It was there that he had the opportunity to work alongside Endl, whose artistic talent, entrepreneurial mindset, and commitment to creativity helped influence an entire generation of local artists.

In the early 2000s, Creative Pig Minds served as both a creative outlet and a collaborative environment where artists could experiment, learn, and develop their skills. For Nicolosi, it became an important stepping stone in his professional journey.

“Brian taught me a tremendous amount about illustration, design, and the creative process,” Nicolosi recalls. “He pushed people to think differently and encouraged artists to develop their own voice while continuing to improve their craft.”

During those years, Nicolosi worked on a variety of projects that included illustrations, logos, branding materials, promotional artwork, and creative concepts for businesses and organizations throughout Northern Illinois. The experience provided valuable real-world opportunities to develop technical skills while learning how creative work could help organizations communicate more effectively.

Creative Pig Minds was never simply about producing artwork. It was about solving problems creatively and helping organizations tell their stories visually. Those lessons would later become foundational to Nicolosi’s own approach as a designer and business owner.

Over the years, both artists followed different paths while remaining active in the local creative community. Nicolosi went on to establish Astute Web Group and build a career focused on web design, branding, illustration, and digital strategy. Endl continued to pursue creative ventures while eventually founding Pig Minds Brewing, which became known not only for its craft beverages but also for its strong emphasis on creativity, community involvement, and entrepreneurship.

Despite those different career paths, the influence of those early Creative Pig Minds years remains evident.

Many of the same principles that guided the work being done at Creative Pig Minds continue to influence Nicolosi’s projects today. Whether designing a logo, creating a website, developing a comic book series, or helping a nonprofit organization communicate its mission, the goal remains the same: use creativity to tell meaningful stories and build lasting connections.

Throughout the Rockford and Machesney Park area, both Nicolosi and Endl have contributed to numerous community projects, businesses, organizations, and nonprofits. Their work has helped shape visual identities, support local initiatives, and strengthen the region’s creative culture.

One of the most valuable lessons Nicolosi learned from Endl was the importance of combining artistic skill with entrepreneurial thinking. Creative talent alone is important, but understanding how to build relationships, support clients, and create sustainable businesses is what allows creative professionals to make a long-term impact.

Looking back, Nicolosi views those early years as an essential chapter in his creative development. The mentorship, collaboration, and artistic experimentation at Creative Pig Minds helped lay a foundation that continues to influence his work more than two decades later.
